Sophie’s Search for a Cure

Sophie’s Search for a Cure

A 64 minute video documentary about one woman’s personal journey with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a “Parkinson-Plus” movement disorder. Sophie died in 2007 after 11 years with MSA.

Sophie’s Search for a Cure chronicles Sophie's struggle with MSA and documents the effects on Sophie and her family.

Racing against time and her diminishing abilities, Sophie searches the medical community, online support groups, and the political system, looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. In the process, she becomes involved in fundraising for research and raising awareness of MSA.

Throughout the journey, Sophie’s spirit and joy of life touches all who encounter her.

The video was sponsored, in part, by The Parkinson’s Institute of Sunnyvale, CA (USA), a Parkinson's disease research and treatment center where Sophie was a patient.

If you, or someone you care for, have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, understanding what is going on can really help. The Parkinson’s Disease Society (PDS) has produced a DVD for people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s called Being There.

In this DVD, some of the UK’s top specialists answer common questions and concerns about Parkinson’s. Also, people with Parkinson’s talk candidly about how the condition has affected their lives; and optimistically about the future.

The PDS wants this DVD to be given to each and every person diagnosed with Parkinson’s, as soon as they are told they have it.

Using cueing to improve mobility in Parkinson's Disease: A CD-Rom for therapists

Using cueing to improve mobility in Parkinson's Disease: A CD-Rom for therapists

  • Author: Alice Nieuwboer
  • Publisher: The RESCUE consortium (March 2007)
  • Language: English

The Rescue consortium, a research collaboration between Northumbria University (United Kingdom), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) have developed a CD-Rom as a guide for therapists who want to use cueing to treat gait and gait-related activities in patients with Parkinson's disease. The RESCUE collaboration conducted a clinical trial that has confirmed the use of cueing as an effective treatment in the home situation. In preparation for this trial, an actual cueing treatment method was developed, which is presented on this CD-Rom. As well as evidence-based cueing guidelines, therapists will find cueing instructions and specific exercises, richly linked to illustrative video clips, centred around 12 therapy aims related to improving gait and gait-related activities. The CD-Rom also contains information on disease background and clinical evaluation tools.
