Home Exercises and movement advice for people with Parkinson's Disease

MOVE IT! - An Exercise and Mobility Guide for Parkinson's Disease

Exercise in conjunction with medication is one of the best things that can be done to counteract the negative physical effects of Parkinson's disease.

"MOVE IT! - An Exercise and Mobility Guide for Parkinson's Disease " was inspired by persons with Parkinson's disease. The author, Kevin Lockette, physical therapist and co-author of Conditioning with Physical Disabilities, Human Kinetics Publishers, has taught community exercise classes for Parkinson's support groups for many years.

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder that is unique. Due to this fact, the video/DVD format is the best way to illustrate movement techniques and exercise with actual persons with Parkinson's. The book format also offers useful additional information that is best presented in written form/text.

Lockette also states that the mobility techniques and exercises can also apply to seniors who have different disabilities or who have some difficulty with mobility. “There is great relevance to this material. There truly are not many comprehensive resources on exercise and mobility for the disabled seniors or the more frail elderly. MOVE IT carries over well to this population,” states Lockette.

The book and DVD includes:

  • Overview of physical symptoms
  • Medication review in easily understandable terms
  • Techniques and tricks for improved mobility including bed mobility, transfers & walking.
  • Anti- freezing techniques
  • Adaptive Devices for easier everyday living
  • Assisted Device overview for safer walking
  • Complete exercise programs specific for Parkinson's Disease
  • Exercise programs for all physical levels (Beginner, intermediate and advanced)
  • Complete guide and exercise program for flexibility

10 percent of proceeds of sales will go to the NPF (National Parkinson Foundation) and Hawaii Parkinsons Association.

Voice Aerobics DVD

Voice Aerobics DVD

Everyone with Parkinson’s Disease may have different symptoms, but, most will include stiffness and tremor. Voice and swallowing problems are frequently another symptom of this disease, sometimes occurring early, and sometimes later as the disease progresses. The Voice Aerobics™ DVD give those individuals a program that they can do on their own, at home. Developed by Mary Spremulli,MA,CCC-SLP, a local medical speech pathologist, licensed nurse, and lecturer, with over 25 years healthcare experience, Voice Aerobics™ is a three part exercise program which focuses on: breath support, posture, and vocal function exercises for improved vocal performance.

Voice Aerobics™, was started in 1999 as a 50 minute exercise class. It combines techniques from voice therapy and exercise physiology. It was designed originally as an “after therapy” program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease, however, the class attracted participants with a variety of backgrounds, including, individuals who were involved in choral work, but felt they were losing power in their voice.

Speech and voice symptoms occurring with Parkinson’s Disease are usually classified as a hypo kinetic dysarthria (hypo-slow, kinetic-referring to muscle movement, and dys-difficult, arthria-having to do with speech). The actual speech and voice of the person, is characterized as: low in volume, rate of speech which is too rushed or fast, low pitched, and monotone (boooooring!) Many people with Parkinson’s Disease complain that other people are always asking them to repeat, even though they think they’re talking just fine. Loss of facial expression is also associated with Parkinson's disease. The changes in voice and swallowing can be insidious (sneaky), and occur gradually over time. Consequently, the person who has the problem may not even realize how poor their voice has become, until their doctor is referring them for speech therapy.

10% of the DVD profits are donated to the National Parkinson's Foundation and the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Foundation.

Home Exercises and movement advice for people with Parkinson's Disease

Home Exercises and movement advice for people with Parkinson's Disease

The DVD 'Home Exercises and movement advice for people with Parkinson's Disease' was developed for patients with Parkinson’s disease and their carer’s as well as therapists as a source of advice and instructions for daily exercises and movements that can be performed in the home situation.

The DVD was developed for the Dutch Parkinson's disease association (www.parkinson-vereniging.nl ), under auspices of the World Federation of Neurology Research group for Parkinsonism and related disorders.

The advice and exercises are divided into a number of functional mobility related domains that can cause problems in the daily life of Parkinson’s patients:

  • Walking
  • Balance
  • Posture
  • Transfers
  • Bed mobility
  • Flexibility and physical condition
  • Relaxation

In particular, the DVD addresses the use of cueing techniques in the own home environment.

The DVD is also useful for therapists and other professionals in helping patients to maintain or improving mobility in daily life. A PDF document on the DVD allows the therapist to print specific exercises.

The English DVD can be purchased via www.parkinsondvd.com.
