Frequently asked question (FAQ)

How can I find a practitioner in a particular complementary therapy?

There are many different ways in which you can track down a reputable practitioner of a particular complementary therapy. The vast majority of practitioners within the area of complementary therapy are excellent but (as in any profession) some individuals will not practise to the same high standards. It is therefore very important to find someone you can trust. The best and most reliable way is by word of mouth: if someone you know has first-hand experience of a practitioner in a therapy area which interests you, and can make a positive recommendation, this is probably worth pursuing.

Once you have identified a treatment in which you are interested, find out if therapists in this area have a professional body with which they may be registered. If this is the case, track down the practitioners in your area via their professional body, in order to ensure the person you contact is appropriately qualified and registered.

Once you have identified the practitioners in your area, give them a ring and ask questions about their therapies, the evidence for their use, potential side effects and the overall service they provide. Don’t be afraid to ask for references and follow these up before making an appointment. You may also find it is worth asking others or your Parkinson’s nurse specialist or doctor. They may know of a reputable local therapist or centre where you can access complementary therapies more easily.
