Frequently asked question (FAQ)

I have just been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It’s a shock but I’d like to think there’s something I can do to help myself. Is there?

Yes, there are lots of things you can do and you are already helping yourself by having such a positive attitude. If you think constructively about what you can do and how you can avoid and solve problems, you are already giving yourself a very good chance of coping well with Parkinson’s. This does not mean that you will feel on top of things every day – none of us do! However, in general, you will be looking for solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Retaining your interests and activities (or replacing lost ones with something new), learning to maintain a good posture and doing suitable exercises and eating sensibly are all things that only you can do. Many people are also helped by gathering information about Parkinson’s and its treatment, so that they understand better what is happening to them and how things work. Finally, you can continue as you have started by being willing to ask questions and so being really involved in planning your own care. There are also some commercially published books by people with Parkinson’s that promote a positive attitude.
