Frequently asked question (FAQ)

One friend has told me that I will have to give up the active things I enjoy doing (which are dancing, walking, cycling and gardening) now that I have Parkinson’s. Another friend disagreed, and said that it would be much better for me to keep on with them. Who’s right?

There is no need for you to give up your activities because of your Parkinson’s. Almost any form of exercise that you enjoy and that you can carry out safely and without undue fatigue is beneficial. The benefit comes in lots of different ways: physically in keeping your body fit and your joints and muscles in good condition; emotionally through the enjoyment and the sense of achievement; and sociallybecause you get out to meet people and have things to think or talk about other than your Parkinson’s. If you have any doubts about your chosen form of exercise, check with your doctor first.
