Complementary therapy and Parkinson's: Alexander Technique

Alexander Technique

What is the Alexander Technique?

A simple yet practical method, the Alexander Technique aims to improve movement, posture, balance, support and coordination, through correcting movement habits to reduce – or even eliminate - harmful tensions in the body. It teaches the best use of the body in daily activities such as sitting, standing, walking and lifting, educating the body to use an appropriate amount of effort and energy.

This ‘re-education’ of the mind and body does not require strength or physical exertion but it does involve commitment in order to overcome the tension induced by years of poor posture, and improper lifting, sitting and standing.

Did you know?

Around 1900 Frederick Alexander, an Australia actor, founded the Alexander Technique to eliminate tension in the head, neck and back in order to overcome vocal problems. After doctors failed to identify the cause of his hoarse, stained voice during performances Frederick used mirrors to watch himself perform and realised his problems were the result of bad 'use' of his body causing tensions in the head, neck and back. By ensuring he used his body correctly his problems disappeared - and the Alexander Technique was born.
