What makes complementary therapies so popular now?

Despite enormous advances in recent years, conventional, Western medicine does not have all the answers. As a result, many people – particularly those with long term conditions, such as Parkinson’s - are looking for ways in which to help themselves.

Many people have also become disillusioned with mainstream medicine, perhaps because symptoms aren’t improving, or they are reluctant to take chemical medication.

So, as more information on complementary treatments has become available (through the media and especially the internet), people have become more open to trying the various treatments on offer and improve their over-all health, as well as the specific condition.  But it is important to stress that this holistic approach is not exclusive to complementary therapies. Many doctors and other conventional healthcare disciplines, such as nursing, occupational therapy and physiotherapy, also consider all aspects of the individual’s life - including their physical and mental state as well as their social background - in treatment and management, especially of long term conditions such as Parkinson’s. Many doctors also advocate multidisciplinary working, involving many different types of health professionals, which by its very nature, encourages holistic care.

Another reason why complementary therapies have become popular is because they are often considered ‘harmless’ and a natural alternative to medications. However the perception that they are harmless is debatable. As with any treatment there can be side effects or reactions with other medicines or treatments, so it is always important to tell your therapist of any other medicines or treatments you are using.
