Complementary therapy and Parkinson's: Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of massage, sometimes known as ‘needle-less acupressure’, which aims to help correct imbalances in the body, treat pain and illness, enhance the body’s natural healing powers, facilitate relaxation and promote good health.

Rhythmic pressure from the thumbs, fingers and palms is directed at specific points of the body to stimulate and improve the body's energy flow (Chi) without the use of any instruments or needles.  The movements are believed to rebalance any excess or lack of energy along the body's energy pathways.  Many of the techniques are common to other therapies including massage and physiotherapy.

It is a holistic therapy, in that it treats the individual as a whole including physical, mental and emotional levels.

Did you know?

Shiatsu was officially recognised by the Japanese Government in 1964 after being developed in the early 20th century by Tamai Tempaku. He incorporated newer, Western sciences of anatomy and physiology with several older Eastern methods of treatment, which had been used over many centuries.
