Caring and your career

If you still work but are finding it increasingly hard to continue and feel you should stop, make sure this is the right decision for you.  Talk to your employer as they may be prepared to let you alter your work pattern and perhaps reduce your hours, job share or work from home for example.  Don’t make any rash decisions and remember that you need to consider the following:

  • how you will manage with less money
  • whether stopping work will affect your independence and social contact
  • what the long term impact on your future employment will be
  • how the decision will affect your pension.

Support organisations may be able to advise you on different options and how to assess what is right for you  - see ‘What help is available?’ and ‘Where can I find more information?’.

Did you know?

Seven out of ten carers under the age of 50 are unable to have paid employment because of the demands of their caring duties. This statistic rises to eight out of ten for carers aged 56 to 60. 1
