How do I find an occupational therapist?

Referral procedures depend on the country in which you live and treatment may or may not be accessible though your country’s national health system.

In some countries, such as in Slovenia, occupational therapy is prescribed by medical doctors– - usually a neurologist, or general physician. In other countries, such as Sweden and the UK, people with Parkinson’s can contact an occupational therapist on their own or a family member’s initiative, but may in some cases still require a doctor’s or other professional’s referral,

If this treatment is not state-funded, you can also be seen on a private basis – this means you will have to pay for any treatment and assessment you receive.

Training and accreditation varies throughout Europe so it is best to check the experience of anyone you consult (it is helpful to be seen by someone who has previously treated people with Parkinson’s), always ask for references and establish the likely costs before treatment commences.

Best Practice Guidelines are available online for occupational therapists working with people who have Parkinson’ s hyper-link to OT guidelines in the further info. section

The Parkinson’s organisation in your country may be able to provide information based on members’ experiences. The EPDA website contains the contact details for European and International Parkinson’s organisations.
