What is
continuous dopaminergic stimulation (CDS)?
Continuous dopaminergic stimulation (CDS) is a Parkinson’s treatment
based on the concept that continuous stimulation using dopaminergic agents (medications that imitate or mimic levodopa’s action by directly stimulating the brain’s dopamine receptors) will delay or
prevent the development of motor symptoms associated with the long term use of
oral levodopa.
In the basal
ganglia area of a healthy brain, dopaminergic neurons usually fire in a
random but continuous manner. This maintains relatively constant levels of the
neurotransmitter dopamine.
