Continuous dopaminergic stimulation (CDS)

What is continuous dopaminergic stimulation (CDS)?

Continuous dopaminergic stimulation (CDS) is a Parkinson’s treatment based on the concept that continuous stimulation using dopaminergic agents (medications that imitate or mimic levodopa’s action by directly stimulating the brain’s dopamine receptors) will delay or prevent the development of motor symptoms associated with the long term use of oral levodopa.

In the basal ganglia area of a healthy brain, dopaminergic neurons usually fire in a random but continuous manner. This maintains relatively constant levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Did you know?

Levodopa was developed in the late 1960s and was the first medication proven effective in treating a chronic neurodegenerative disease like Parkinson’s.  It is still the most effective treatment of motor symptoms available today.
