REWRITE TOMORROW
.

How are motor fluctuations diagnosed?

If you think you are starting to experience motor fluctuations, you should discuss this with your doctor promptly as this can have important benefits:

  • your treatment can be optimised to minimise your symptoms
  • wearing off can be an early warning sign of dyskinesias and early treatment may reduce the likelihood of such involuntary movements developing.

Don’t wait for your doctor to ask – tell them how long your medication is lasting and what happens when it wears off.  Doctors treating Parkinson’s tend to focus on motor symptoms, particularly as they are easier to recognise and are less subjective, but you should still tell them about your non-motor symptoms.   Doing so also helps to make doctors aware of the importance of non-motor symptoms and increased awareness can lead to better treatment generally.
