DLB is caused by the accumulation of microscopic protein deposits (Lewy
bodies) within the brain, which are associated with the degeneration and death
of neurons or nerve cells in the upper part of the brain. It is unclear why these Lewy bodies form but,
when they do, they interfere with the normal functioning of the brain and so
cause a range of symptoms.
The genetics of DLB are still unclear but it appears that there is a
slightly higher risk of developing DLB if closely related family members have
the illness, but this increased risk is still quite low.
