MSA and Parkinson’s

Due to the similarities in some symptoms, MSA is often mistaken for Parkinson’s.  Moreover, because of these similarities, MSA is included in a group of diseases sometimes referred to as Parkinson’s Plus Syndrome.  However there are subtle differences and it is important that a doctor experienced in movement disorders is consulted in order to reach an accurate diagnosis.  The treatment of Parkinson’s and MSA is different, although there is some overlap, and accurate diagnosis is paramount to optimise each condition’s management.

Did you know?

There are three main groups of MSA symptoms: Parkinsonian (slow, stiff movement), cerebellar (co-ordinating movement and balance) and autonomic (automatic body functions).
