To be predisposed to PSP,
a person must have the H1 Haploptype gene.
By way of example, in the UK this means over half the population could have PSP, i.e. over 30 million people.
At present the cause of PSP is unclear although recent
research has produced several theories and this is an area of ongoing
investigation. Some believe that PSP may
be triggered by a virus that enters the body but does not show any signs or
symptoms for years, or it could be caused by a blow to the head. Others think that it may be the result of
complex genetic mutations. Further research is required in order to draw
any accurate conclusions.
