Diagnosis

Bradykinesia is a feature of a number of disorders and it is important that it is correctly diagnosed.  This is usually done by seeing how quickly you can tap your finger and thumb together, or tap your foot up and down.

A thorough family history should also be taken and, in a few specific cases, tests may be carried out, for example an MRI scan may be given in some circumstances to exclude stroke or a tumour.  A medical history should also be taken as certain medication can cause bradykinesia.

Did you know?

There is a Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) to help establish the severity of bradykinesia, as well as rigidity and tremor.
