Compulsive behaviour can be defined as an inability to
resist a temptation or animpulse
that may cause harm either to oneself or to others. Usually the motivation is the prospect of
pleasure or reward. An inability to
resist impulses is also known as Impulse Control Disorder (ICD).
Often compulsive behaviour is out of character and the
person displaying it may be unaware of this change in their personality. It is therefore very important that family
and friends who observe unusual behavioural traits discuss this as soon as
possible with the individual and their doctor or other healthcare professional,
as appropriate, so that prompt treatment can be given.
