This can be a distressing time and because of the sensitive
or private nature of some behaviour, such as hypersexuality, compulsive eating
or gambling for example, it is often not easy for family or friends to discuss
the problem with the person. Often the
person experiencing compulsive disorders may not be aware of the changes in
their behaviour so it is important for family and friends to note the changes
and talk to their doctor or, depending on the country in which they live, a
Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialist, as soon as possible. They will be able to provide initial advice
and may be able to successfully treat the problem, or they may refer the person
to another member of the multidisciplinary team such as a psychologist. Although it can be difficult to tackle such
sensitive issues, prompt action can usually find effective treatment and
behaviour may soon return to normal.
