Diagnosis

A doctor will test for rigidity by flexing and extending your relaxed wrist and the elbow joint.  If rigidity is present it will be felt as an increase in muscle tone with a resistance to these passive movements in both directions and through the full range of movement.

Your doctor will look for sustained (lead pipe) rigidity when performing this movement or intermittent (cogwheel) rigidity if tremor is also present.

Did you know?

There are over 640 muscles in the human body. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones, but facial muscles are attached to other muscles or to your skin, so just a tiny contraction in a facial muscle pulls your facial skin and changes your expression.
