Stem cell therapy: Research papers
Induction of A9 dopaminergic neurons from neural stem cells improves motor function in an animal model of Parkinson's disease
This demonstrates that given the correct signals, NSCs can be induced to become dopaminergic neurons that can differentiate into the correct nigrastriatal phenotype required for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Partial recovery of dopaminergic pathway after graft of adult mesenchymal stem cells in a rat model of Parkinson's disease
These data demonstrate that graft of adult mesemchymal stem cells reduces behavioral effects induced by 6-hydroxydopamine lesion and partially restores the dopaminergic markers and vesicular striatal pool of dopamine. This cellular approach might be a restorative therapy in Parkinson's disease.

Will Stem Cell Biology Generate New Therapies for Parkinson's Disease?
Three papers recently published in Nature Medicine provide the most detailed analyses of fetal midbrain grafts in patients with Parkinson's disease. Some of the results are surprising and suggest a new wave of questions aimed at both the value of cell therapy and the nature of the disease itself.

Noggin Enhances Dopamine Neuron Production from Human Embryonic Stem Cells and Improves Behavioral Outcome After Transplantation
The study concludes that Noggin promotes dopamine neuron differentiation and survival from human and mouse embryonic stem cells. Disclosure of potential conflicts of interest is found at the end of this article.

What are the prospects of stem cell therapy for neurology?
This article examines some key problems that need to be resolved before the promise of stem cells for regenerative neurology can be realised.

Prospects of stem cell therapy for replacing dopamine neurons in Parkinson's disease
Moreover, a clinically competitive cell therapy for PD will require better criteria for patient selection, improved functional efficacy of grafts by a tailor-made transplantation procedure providing optimum repair of the patient's DA system and strategies to prevent dyskinesias and tumor formation.
