Your consultant should be your first point of contact and will be able to refer you to a neurosurgeon as appropriate. This is a specialised field and one in which there is a lot of ongoing research and so information is constantly being updated.

The Parkinson’s association in your country may be able to provide information based on members’ experiences. The EPDA website contains the contact details for European and International Parkinson’s organisations.

Deep Brain Stimulation is becoming safer and more accessible, and about 15% of people with Parkinson’s are suitable for it. However it is normally offered only when other treatments have failed, or “when you have come to the end of the road with medication”, to quote Prof. S. Gill, Frenchay Hospital, Bristol neurosurgeon and researcher, but only after an assessment as to suitability.
